Built to Last, the defining management study of the nineties, showed how great companies triumph over time and how long-term sustained performance can be engineered into the DNA of an enterprise from the very beginning.
But what about the company that is not born with great DNA? How can good companies, mediocre companies, even bad companies achieve enduring greatness?

The Study
For years, this question preyed on the mind of Jim Collins. Are there companies that defy gravity and convert long-term mediocrity or worse into long-term superiority? And if so, what are the universal distinguishing characteristics that cause a company to go from good to great?

The Standards
Using tough benchmarks, Collins and his research team identified a set of elite companies that made the leap to great results and sustained those results for at least fifteen years. How great? After the leap, the good-to-great companies generated cumulative stock returns that beat the general stock market by an average of seven times in fifteen years, better than twice the results delivered by a composite index of the worldÕs greatest companies, including Coca-Cola, Intel, General Electric, and Merck.

The Comparisons
The research team contrasted the good-to-great companies with a carefully selected set of comparison companies that failed to make the leap from good to great. What was different? Why did one set of companies become truly great performers while the other set remained only good?

Over five years, the team analyzed the histories of all twenty-eight companies in the study. After sifting through mountains of data and thousands of pages of interviews, Collins and his crew discovered the key determinants of greatness why some companies make the leap and others don't.

The Findings
The findings of the Good to Great study will surprise many readers and shed light on virtually every area of management strategy and practice. The findings include:

* Level 5 Leaders: The research team was shocked to discover the type of leadership required to achieve greatness.
* The Hedgehog Concept (Simplicity within the Three Circles): To go from good to great requires transcending the curse of competence.

Simple Internet Meter is my new bandwidth monitor. After my program CS Fire Monitor came out years ago I had many requests for added features. Many of those features where not possible to add using the Windows API. Such as seeing what is internet traffic and what is local network traffic. The only way to accomplish this is to look at the packet data. So I made this program using WinPcap and PacketX.dll.

As many of the users know from my other work I am a performance nut. I try to have my programs run fast and clean all the while taking as little out of the system as possible. I put extra effort into Simple Internet Meter to make sure it does its job without affecting the system in anyway. The program will auto clean its used memory any time the memory usage goes above 10 mb. The program is designed to run 24/7.

A great feature I included was the ability for other programs to read the current data from the program. Such as a screen saver. I wrote a screen saver and is included with the program. I included the source code for the screen saver (VB 6) so other programmers can see how to work with Simple Internet Meter. The reason I added this was so other programmers can make their own programs read from it. You may ask besides a screen saver what other program would need this info? Well some new keyboards are coming out with LCD screens and such so one good example is a program to display the stats to that LCD screen. If you have written a program to work with Simple Internet Meter please contact me and let me know, I will be more than happy to post a link as along as the program is safe to use.

Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) plans to give its corporate customers the option of hosting the company's new Web-based Office 2010 offering on their own servers in order to give them more control of the product.
"All Office volume licensing customers will have the right to Web apps to run themselves on-premises," said Chris Capossela, senior VP for Microsoft's Business unit, in an interview. "This is a really big distinction between Microsoft and our competition," said Capossela, in a reference to rival Google.

Google (NSDQ: GOOG)'s cloud-based Google Apps, which includes Office-style word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation tools, must be tapped from Google's own servers—a situation that makes some IT managers uneasy due to concerns about privacy and security.
"We really believe that for many customers they want the choice of being able to control things themselves," said Capossela. Microsoft will also give its corporate customers the option to access Office Web, as Microsoft is calling the Internet-based version of Office 2010, externally if they lack the infrastructure to run it in internally.

Access to Office Web, which includes versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote optimized for the cloud, is available to Microsoft's subscription customers at no additional charge to the client version. Consumers will be able to access Office Web entirely for free through Microsoft's Windows Live portal.

Office Web will be part of the Office 2010 general release, which is slated for the first half of next year.

Among the enhancements over previous editions are beefed up video and image processing tools that let users edit photos and videos from within their Office documents. New collaboration capabilities allow multiple users to access and edit a single document over the Web.

Microsoft on Monday released a technical preview of the product to selected developers. It plans to introduce a beta version later this year.

1. Do Not Interfere In Others' Business Unless Asked.

Most of us create our own problems by interfering too often in others' affairs. We do so because somehow we have convinced ourselves that our way is the best way, our logic is the perfect logic and those who do not conform to our thinking must be criticized and steered to the right direction, our direction. This thinking denies the existence of individuality and consequently the existence of God.. God has created each one of us in a unique way. No two human beings can think or act in exactly the same way. All men or women act the way they do because God within them prompts them that way. Mind your own business and you will keep your peace.

2. Forgive And Forget:

This is the most powerful aid to peace of mind. We often develop ill feelings inside our heart for the person who insults us or harms us. We nurture grievances. This in turn results in loss of sleep, development of stomach ulcers, and high blood pressure. This insult or injury was done once, but nourishing of grievance goes on forever by constantly remembering it. Get over this bad habit. Life is too short to waste in such trifles. Forgive,20Forget, and march on. Love flourishes in giving and forgiving.

3. Do Not Crave For Recognition:

This world is full of selfish people. They seldom praise anybody without selfish motives. They may praise you today because you are in power, but no sooner than you are powerless, they will forget your achievement and will start finding faults in you. Why do you wish to kill yours lf in striving for their recognition? Their recognition is not worth the aggravation. Do your duties ethically and sincerely.

4. Do Not Be Jealous:

We all have experienced how jealousy can disturb our peace of mind. You know that you work harder than your colleagues in the office, but sometimes they get promotions; you do not. You started a business several years ago, but you are not as successful as your neighbor whose business is only one year old. There are several examples like these in everyday life. Should you be jealous? No. Remember everybody's life is shaped by his/her destiny, which has now become his/her reality. If you are destined to be rich, nothing in the world can stop you. If you are not so destined, no one can help you either. Nothing will be gained by blaming others for your misfortune. Jealousy will not get you anywhere; it will only take away your peace of mind.

5. Change Yourself According To The Environment:

If you try to change the environment single-handedly, the chances are you will fail. Instead, change yourself to suit your environment. As you do this, even the environment, which has been unfriendly to you, will mysteriously change and seem congenial and harmonious.

6. Endure What Cannot Be Cured:

This is the best way to turn a disadvantage into an advantage. Every day we face numerous inconveniences, ailments, irritations, and accidents that are beyond our control. If we cannot control them or change them, we must learn to put up with these things. We must learn to endure them cheerfully. Believe in yourself and you will gain in terms of patience, inner strength and will power.

7. Do Not Bite Off More Than You Can Chew:

This maxim needs to be remembered constantly. We often tend to take more responsibilities than we are capable of carrying out. This is done to satisfy our ego. Know your limitations. . Why take on additional loads that may create more worries? You cannot gain peace of mind by expanding your external activities. Reduce your material engagements and spend time in prayer, introspection and meditation. This will reduce those thoughts in your mind that make you restless. Uncluttered mind will produce greater peace of mind.

8. Meditate Regularly:

Meditation calms the mind and gets rid of disturbing thoughts. This is the highest state of peace of mind. Try and experience it yourself. If you meditate earnestly for half an hour everyday, your mind will tend to become peaceful during the remaining twenty-three and half-hours. Your mind will not be easily disturbed as it was before. You would benefit by gradually increasing the period of daily meditation. You may think that this will interfere with your daily work. On the contrary, this will increase your efficiency and you will be able to produce better results in less time.

9. Never Leave The Mind Vacant:

An empty mind is the devil's workshop. All evil actions start in the vacant mind. Keep your mind occupied in something positive, something worthwhile. Actively follow a hobby. Do something that holds your interest. You must decide what you value more: money or peace of mind. Your hobby, like social work or religious work, may not always earn you more money, but you will have a sense of fulfillment and achievement. Even when you are resting physically, occupy yourself in healthy reading or mental chanting of God's name.

10. Do Not Procrastinate And Never Regret:

Do not waste time in protracted wondering " Should I or shouldn't I?" Days, weeks, months, and years may be wasted in that futile mental debating. You can never plan enough because you can never anticipate all future happenings. Value your time and do the things that need to be done. It does not matter if you fail the first time. You can learn from your mistakes and succeed the next time. Sitting back and worrying will lead to nothing. Learn from your mistakes, but do not brood over the past. DO NOT REGRET. Whatever happened was destined to happen only that way. Why cry over split milk?

There is life outside projects….your life and your family. Love your work but not your project or the company. Many developers after a certain amount of time become possessive about the project and the company. Do a professional job but don’t end up marrying the project or the company. Try to come on time and go on time. So that you do not get saturated and work on the project for a longer time and effectively. Don’t become a zombie - nobody said on his death bed that he would have liked to spend more time in the office.

Try to freeze your requirements before the start of the project. In practical scenarios it is very difficult to control the end customer. Step in to help others when they are stuck but you should know when to step out as well. There’s a thin line between helping somebody cross a tough hurdle and
carrying him on your shoulders - always be aware of this.

If you are a developer avoid doing their work from start to finish. Yes, give them hints but do not do complete coding for them.If you are a project manager you should analyze such kind of developers and take effective action at the very beginning which may even mean removing the resource from the project. Remember, your team is only as strong as its weakest link.

Do not make projects your learning ground. Customer’s pay heavily for making software so do not make it a learning ground. In many projects developers try to implement new technologies in mid of the project just by hearing jargons.

Test, Test and Test. That’s the key to success for any software project.

Do not hide your defects. Developers are the best guys who know where the code will crash. Do not hide it, analyze and fix it. Do not cheat and leave the same till it goes to the end client. Avoid ego issues during the project. Many times in a project developers and managers get stuck up with ego issues. Sometimes stepping back makes the project move further Tackle bigger problems of the project first. The best way to complete any project is to start those screens which are used by the customer more often. For instance every project has non-frequent masters code them later and start the transaction screens first. Many time developers end up doing nitty gritty work and forget the bigger part of the project.

Do not talk about stars. Every project starts with talking about stars but later ends up somewhere else. Developers talk about concepts of OOP, full database normalization, design patterns etc etc. These fundamentals are important but it should end up with only jargons. Some times practical deadlines make it impossible to implement these features. Keep yourself flexible and compromise with quality when you have deadlines…..believe me it’s not a sin if a customer is giving you unreasonable deadlines.

Maintaining a right project hierarchy is very important i.e. the A model. In a model you have one senior person at the top, project manager, team leader, senior developers and then juniors. The right proportion of people from each grade is important. On any level if you have too much concentration you will have ego issue and promotion issues. Do not treat your project people as a resource. Project managers have this jargon of thinking of every one as a resource. That’s bookish thinking; any one working in a project is finally a human being with emotions. The moment you consider them as a resource they will also consider you as a resource. Moreover the word resource reminds you of water resources, mineral resources, oil & natural gas resources, etc which become empty some day - you get the point. In your own interests wipe off the word from your vocabulary.

Make yourself visible. If you think you have done something good show it, advertise it, make it visible. It will help you during your assessment.
Avoid getting into project politics. Peace of mind is the most important thing. Getting into egos and politics will only complicate things.

If you are working in a maintenance project upgrade yourself time to time. Change is the only constant in life - this is painfully true in the software industry more than anywhere else.

In case you are maintaining some other developers’ code do not criticize the code. Who knows in what circumstances the project was made .If you are a project manager in the project do not make it a compulsory rule that you will never touch coding. Remember juniors respect their seniors only if they sit with them for development and understand their difficulties. This is a time tested rule - people only respect leaders who lead from the front rather than issue orders from the rear - don’t be a preacher, let your actions do the talking.

If any resource is working on a project for more than a year his performance comes down. Prepare a proper KT plan and bring in new resources and roll the old resources off for some better prospects. Avoid unnecessary meetings.

It is estimated that currently there are 25 million credit cards in India 40% of which are actively used. It is further estimated that consumers in India spend an average of around Rs 4000 per month on their credit cards. But nowadays India also is in the grip of financial crisis and overall default rates of the credit cards have risen by almost 2% in the past year to 10 -12% of the turn over.

The SBI creditcards, the nation's second largest card issuer is likely to report a loss for the consecutive year as defaults on credit cards payments have mounted. The SBI Cards, which is owned by the State Bank of India and the US- based GE Money in the 60:40 ratio, reported a loss of Rs 600 million on total income of 4400 million in the six months ended September 30,2008.The card issuer had suffered a loss of Rs 1500 million in 2007-2008 against a net profit of Rs 600 million in 2006-2007.

A senior official of the SBI CreditCards, who did not want to be identified, said, "We have consciously slowed down sourcing customers by more than 50 percent from a peak of one hundred thousand cards a month last year to 20,000 to 30,000 a month now to ensure a good portfolio. It's a difficult market." He said credit checks have increased while the minimum salary criterion for issue of cards has been revised to Rs 200,000 to Rs 240,000 per year from last year's Rs 144,000.

An official of the Credit Cards section of the ICICI Bank said, " In 2007-2008 the credit cards business grew by 20 to 25 per cent. We had done 1.5 million cards in 2007 -2008 which has been reduced by 60 percent in the first 10 months of 2008-2009. The credit losses have increased by more than 1percentage point of the spread between lending rates and cost.

Because of increase in the default rate of credit card payments, many banks are invading the savings accounts of customers not paying their bills. Several banks that issue credit cards have agreements with customers giving them the right to tap into their savings accounts with them to set off overdue credit card debt. But the right was seldom exercised in the past, with banks preferring to negotiate with customers and giving them extra time to pay.

In the new scenario it is necessary for everybody to be extra careful about repayment of loans particularly the credit card loans. Some precautions are necessary in this regard

1. If you have no intention of revolving on your card then ensure that you pay the entire amount outstanding on your card well before the due date so that the credit in your account happens in time.
2. Of all your debts, always repay your card outstanding first as it is the most costly form of debt.
3. If you have outstanding on multiple cards, repay the one with the maximum interest first.
4. Explore if you can repay your card debts by taking an alternative form of finance such as a secured or unsecured personal loan.
5. You can also ease out the repayment of your credit card debt by converting the dues on your credit card into equated monthly installments (EMIs), if your bank has this facility and you are eligible for it.
6. Ensure that you build a good track record of timely repayments so that you have a good credit rating with credit bureaus.
7. Make your financial health assessment at regular intervals, at least once a year.
8. The credit card is a convenience tool primarily and a debt management tool for emergencies. So use it only for emergencies.
9. Do not revolve credit on your credit card for long periods, as this is likely to invite financial crisis.
10. If you face difficulties with your card repayments, check with your bank for alternative ways of managing your debt.

What To Do Next?

Once you have this information you need to decide whether or not you can compete with them and over what period of time.

For example:

If a site has 120 links and 200 pages you may wish to add 10 new links per month, and 15 or so pages. Competing at this rate would take you a little over a year to achieve a top 10 ranking. I personally don't recommend adding more than 50 links per month, but feel free to add as many pages as needed. Obviously all pages must have value to a visitor but even 1 a day gets you over 350 per year - more than enough in most cases!

Keeping up his swipes at superstar Shah Rukh Khan and the No.1 slot in Bollywood, Aamir Khan, riding on the super success of his revenge drama Ghajini, has said he never thought Shah Rukh was ever on the top pedestal at all.

He also said Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire failed to "touch" him.

Aamir, during CNN's special edition of Talk Asia, was asked how he feels about being termed the new 'King Khan' after the success of Ghajini. He replied: "I had absolutely no intention of kicking Shah Rukh off his pedestal. Though I have to say, I don't think he ever was on it."

Elaborating, Aamir said: "In my opinion, the actor who I really look up to is Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. He is someone whose work I really like, a fantastic actor and the kind of stardom Mr. Bachchan has seen, none of us can ever hope to see."

The 44-year-old actor, whose latest work, the Hindi remake of Tamil film Ghajini, was a success at the box office, says he feels satisfied with his films only if they turn out to be as they are intended.

"You can never really tell until you see a film with the audience. How it is going to play with the audience. For me, what is important is that when I see the film once it is ready, has it turned out the way we wanted it to? If we have done that, then that makes me feel happy," he said.

Aamir, whose own directorial debut film Taare Zameen Par, failed to get nominated in the foreign film category at the 81st Annual Academy Awards this year, says that Slumdog Millionaire failed to "touch" him.

"I thought the movie was well intended. It was a very sincere attempt, but it didn't touch me personally, and I suspect it because I'm not used to watching Indians speak English, all these slum kids talking in English... it's strange," said Aamir.

South Africa Confirmed As Host Of Champions Trophy

South Africa will host the 2009 Champions Trophy in September and October following unanimous approval of the venue at an International Cricket Council (ICC) Board meeting.

South Africa was recommended as the host for the eight-team, 12-day tournament following its postponement last year, when it was scheduled to be held in Pakistan, and then concerns about bad weather in Sri Lanka.

The New Wanderers Stadium (Johannesburg) and Centurion Park (Pretoria) will be the two venues used.

The board also agreed that the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 in the West Indies, would be played between 30th April and 16th May in St. Lucia, Guyana, Barbados and St. Kitts.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee: The man who invented the world wide web.

It's 20 years since Sir Tim Berners-Lee published a proposal that has revolutionised the way we live. And it's just the start.

In March 1989, Tim Berners-Lee, then a scientist at CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, wrote a paper detailing the means by which the particle physics research community could easily share and search electronic documents.

At the time, the “internet” was used almost exclusively by defence organisations and academic institutions, and communication was entirely text-based, relying on basic newsgroups and remote Telnet chat sessions to send messages between users. Sir Tim realised that the experience needed to be richer than that if the internet was to be truly useful.

His paper, entitled Information Management: A Proposal, extolled the virtues of a simplified form of Standard Generalised Markup Language, and the proposal is now considered to be the foundations upon which the world wide web was built.

Sir Tim’s paper led to the creation of HTML – Hypertext Markup Language – a coding language used to describe how to present text and images in an electronic format. When combined with a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) and HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol), a framework was built that would enable users to access electronic documents in a standard way.

Crucially, Sir Tim found a way to build links into documents themselves, so that they could be connected together, rather than existing as separate and distinct pieces of data.
Two decades on, the impact of Sir Tim’s work is clear to see.

The web has revolutionised the way we live, work and communicate. And now the internet is on the brink of a second transformation, as technology experts search for new ways to make the web more “intelligent”.

The so-called “semantic web” will be a reality within the next 10 years, according to the National Computing Centre, enabling people to make natural language searches and receive accurate, nuanced responses, rather than simply a list of websites where they might be able to find the answer to a question or request, as is currently the case.

“It is essentially the web as a system of intelligent, connected devices, rather than the web as point-to-point links,” said Ted Schadler, an analyst with Forrester Research.

Several early semantic web-style services already exist, such as Twine and Freebase, and a British-born physicist is planning to launch his natural search engine, Wolfram Alpha, next month.

Sir Tim believes the web is still in its infancy, and that in future, the internet will put “all the data in the world” within the reach of every user.
“What’s exciting is that people are building new social systems, new systems of review, new systems of governance.

“My hope is that those will produce new ways of working together effectively and fairly which we can use globally to manage ourselves as a planet.”

Angry Salman Leaves In Autorickshaw From Amrita's Wedding

Bollywood actor Salman Khan lost his temper during Amrita Arora and Shakeel Ladak’s wedding on Thursday (March 5) in Mumbai, where film world’s top celebrities were in attendance. According to reports, Salman was in high spirits when he came to the party. Everything was okay till Shahrukh Khan arrived at the sangeet party of Amrita and Shakeel within 15 minutes of Salman Khan’s arrival.

The reporters, surprised to see both the Khans under the same roof, questioned Salman on whether he and SRK have buried the hatchet between them. An agitated Salman retorted with a “Why do you care?” several times, and then in a bid to escape the media left not in his Mercedes Benz but in an autorickshaw! This infuriated the actor so much that he decided to leave the ceremony instantly.
After throwing a few quick repartees at the media, Salman is reported to have got into an auto rickshaw and requested the driver to take him home. The excited driver is said to have driven a few yards, only to be stopped by Salman’s body guards and friends.

However, the other Khan in question, SRK, was diplomatic to the question. “I wish Salman Khan and his family and Amu and family all the best.” What was meant to be a night of partying for many Bollywood celebrities, finally turned into another Salman scene because of his erratic behaviour.
